How the OBL season works
- Ontario Basketball runs the OBL for its member clubs. It has boys and girls age groups from U9 to U19.
- Each team plays 12 games over five weekends, two to four games a weekend on Saturdays and Sundays. Games are at venues across the province, so teams travel.
- Clubs pick a level when they register: A, AA, AAA or OBLX. Pools of 6 or 7 teams are set from that level and from how each team finished at last season's Provincial Championships or Ontario Cup.
- Schedules come out one to two weeks before each weekend.
- After six games, the re-rank moves teams up or down and sets new pools for the last six games. Only OBL games count. On these pages, Round 1 is the first six games and Round 2 is the last six.
- The team with the best record in each pool after the re-rank is Pool Champion and gets medals.
- A team has to play in the OBL to enter the Provincial Championships. The Ontario Cup doesn't require it.
- In age groups where a lot of teams register at OBLX, Pools A and B start as OBLX pools. After the re-rank, the Pool A teams and the Pool B winner qualify for Provincials.
OBL questions from parents
What happens when an OBL team forfeits?
The other team gets a 2–0 win and the game isn't rescheduled. A team that gives less than 48 hours' notice, or doesn't show up, also pays a fine.
What if a game is cancelled for weather?
When Ontario Basketball cancels a game for weather or other dangerous conditions, it goes in as 0–0 and isn't rescheduled. Each team gets part of its fee back.
Will an OBL game move for a high school game?
No. Published OBL dates don't change, and games aren't rescheduled for high school basketball or other conflicts. Coaches can send a schedule request at least three weeks before the weekend, but it may not be granted.
Can a player play on two OBL teams?
A player stays on one team for the season. They can be called up to an older team in the same club for up to 1 sanctioned tournament or 4 sanctioned games, and only when that team is short of the minimum number of players.
Can a U9 team play in the Ontario Cup?
Yes. U9 teams play in the U10 Ontario Cup group.
Why do U15 and U16 Boys start in November for 2026/27?
Ontario Basketball moved their start from late February to November to space out the weekends. The old spring schedule had back-to-back weekends and ran into high school championships, OFSAA and March Break.
