Youth Basketball Game Rules and Scoring by Age
How a youth basketball game is run changes a lot between U7 and U14. Canada Basketball's Youth Rules Guidelines introduce the structure of the adult game gradually rather than all at once.
Scoring moves from no scorekeeping at U7–U8, to score resets in younger recreational play, to running scores in older and competitive categories. Game length goes from league discretion at U7–U8 to 8-minute quarters at U9–U12 and 10-minute quarters at U13–U14.
Game format follows the same pattern. Small-sided 3v3 and 4v4 basketball comes first, then 5v5 as players develop. Timing rules, timeouts and overtime are also added step by step. U7–U8 uses none of them, and the full set of timing rules is in place by competitive U11–U12.
The guides below explain each rule, when it starts and why Canada Basketball phases it in.
